The newest article to our series is the article about our partnership with Roger Williams University’s Aquaculture Program and the important work the school, the faculty, and the students are doing to help repopulate the oyster species into the bays, estuaries, river and salt-ponds around Bristol Bay in Rhode Island. Dr. Timothy Scott described the importance of shellfish in the ecosystem thusly, “For example, once, decades ago, the oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay was large enough to filter the entire bay every three days. Now, after major storm damage in the early 1900s and the devastation and toll of parasites and bacterial infections more recently, the oyster population numbers have declined so that this same process takes two years. It is only through reseeding Rhode Island’s waters with disease-resistant species of oysters that we will be able to reverse this trend and make inroads toward a healthy oyster population. That will have a measurable impact on the ecosystem of these waters, and, in turn, help create a healthy shellfish harvesting industry.” This is an exciting initiative that Constitution Seafoods is directly involved in and wants to see become very successful.
